Question:
we are just about to install a new garage door on the new extension fairly
strong door but bog standard lock mechanism. just wondered if anyone knows
of any extra locking mechanisms to make the thing a bit more secure.
Answer:
Very good quality hasps and padlocks. Even then it will only delay
them if they really want your stuff.
Last time we were robbed they used bolt cutters and prybar. Probably
took them less than a minute to go through 3 locks and nick my
trailer. If I ever buy another trailer I'll remove a wheel and stick
it somewhere else.
In that case you could use a couple of extra locks mounted on the side
frames, to engage in the sides of the door, probably near the bottom would
be best. I've been meaning to do this with my Cardale door, which has a
locking point at the top, and two in the middle of the sides. If you don't
have a locking point at the top, you could add one or two there as well
Of course, you won't be able to enter the garage through the door if you do
this, but will have to go through the house to open it. My idea was to fit
the locks and probably only use them when away overnight or on holiday,
I've just ordered one of these (the bulldog GD400), it is a substantial bit of
kit. The steel is 3mm thick and its quite a large L shaped bracket with a
square plate 3mm thick to go in the inside of the door. You mount the 'keep'
into a hole you make in the base of the garage and cencrete it in. It's good
enough for my needs, but unless you use one at each corner you can still jemmy
up the bottom corners of the door and fold them back so a person could crawl
in... just not drive the car out .
