Question:
I am looking for individual opinions or a consumer report on Garage Doors.
I live in Southern California and I am considering Martin (Home Depot -
local installer), Amarr, or Anaheim Doors.
Any suggestions or experiences you can share to help me choose.
I am leaning towards 24 gauge steel, double steel insulated door. for
safety, energy efficiency, and look.
Answer:
the first time on a trip to CA. I did not know the relative cost, but I
thought that tilt-up would be cheaper because it has less hardware and a
one-piece door. (I never actually checked prices.) In fact, it seemed to me
that one could buy the tilt mechanism and build the door with some 2x3's and
plywood.
A steel tilt-up garage door is made by bolting together the rectangular
sections of a steel roll-up door and adding cross braces. Therefore the door
itself will cost more. A wooden tilt-up door is much cheaper. I don't know of
any advantage of a steel tilt-up door over a steel roll-up door other than it's
easier to install the hinge and spring assemblies.
the LA Times carries a lot of ads for
garage door installers in one of its weekday papers. Generally, a double-garage
steel door is $500 including installation and hauling away your old door. If
you want a tilt-up instead of a roll-up, add $100. If you want it insulated,
add $100. If you want windows, add $100.
