Question:
Have a garage floor that's made out of concrete. Anyway, in the middle of
the garage, there's a noticable shift in the floor by a visible crack. The height difference is less than a 1/4 of an inch. What would be the best way
to level out the garage floor? Will cementing the surface to flatten it out do any good?
BTW, the garage sits on a hill side and has a lower level. The car parks on top & a small storage area below.
Answer:
-The house was built in the mid 70s. The garage floor has gotten worse from time to time.
I guess I was also wondering if I poured wet cement to through the cracks to the the base (whether it's dirt or what, I'm not sure), perhaps that would
add strength and reduce the room for shifting activities. Thus would prolong the life of the flat redone surface.
-The problem is that there's movement in there. You need to find out what is causing that and fix it for any fix to be permanant. This may be a poorly prepared footing or base or possibly excessive water movement. If
things were done wrong, there isn't much to be done in the way of remidiation that I'm aware of, but if it's due to water, you could have good luck fixing it by working to divert the water. But if it just moves without getting much worse over time, fill it with an
elestomeric caulk which will accept the movement and get on with life.
Much easier than tearing down your garage to correct the footings.
