Question:
We have to purchase a garage door opener and we're considering
a Chamberlin 1/2 hp. chain drive unit. Anyone have any good/bad
experiences with this brand? I know many people with openers and
not one of them have a Chamberlin (they usually have Craftsman).
Answer:
-I have two Liftmaster openers and use Sears keychain remotes and key pad
units for them. Be careful though. Chamberlain has introduced a new code
system with a "Security" logo on the packages which is different, so not
all controls are compatible with all openers in the
Chamberlain/Liftmaster/Craftsman family. There are now the new ones and
the old ones.
Liftmaster is the brand they use for contractors. Chamberlain is the
manufacturer's brand and they are sold under store brands like Craftsman.
-Chamberlain makes the Craftsman openers. Oddly enough
the Chamberlain openers have generally gotten good
comments on the net while the Craftsman openers have
generally gotten bad comments.
-I have a Chamberlin garage door opener that has been in service
on a 2 cargarage door for 13 years. During that time I have had 2
problems.
1. Gear drive wore out and had to be rebuilt. Parts purchased
from Chamberlin certified repair and parts facility. Took
about 2 hours to dismantle and re-assemble.
2. Antenna came loose form circuit board. Even though it was
resoldered, it never worked as well. The remote used to open
the door from a half a block away. It now must be in the driveway.
If I hade to choose again, I would still go with Chamberlin.
